frankly, studying up on congressman ryan's positions on the issues. and -- and governor romney has embraced at least everything i can see. i don't want to say anything in the debate that's not completely accurate. >> there she is, white house correspondent brianna keilar in danville, kentucky. bk, people vote for president not vice president. but this one is important, i think, because of the president's showing last time. am i wrong on that? >> reporter: that's exactly what it is, don. this has become more important because president obama had such a lackluster performance last week in denver. what you've seen, and the polls show it, the romney/ryan ticket has momentum. the polls have tightened in recent days following mitt romney's performance, where he obviously won that debate. there's a lot more attention here. if joe biden is able to perform very well -- and he's a pretty good debater. if he's able to perform pretty well perhaps he can stem some of that momentum, at least dampen a little criticism heading into the debate next week in new york, buy the president a little time.

they think that is fertile territory to find a lot of ways to try to paint mitt romney and paul ryan as, you know, against the middle class and taxing the middle class. i think joe biden is going to wrap mitt romney and paul ryan as tightly together as possible and just sort of drop the ryan plan on top it to try to implode the pair. they think that is good ground. as far as paul ryan is concerned, i think he is kind a policy wonk. his problem is he's a numbers guy, and he's up against frankly and i think both runs previous head of the republican party and michael nutter both said that joe biden is a very accessible politician. he tends to put things the way that people get it immediately. he's just got that kind of manner about him. i think that's the -- in some ways, you know, we look at the substance and style. as far as style is concerned, i think paul ryan's fear here is he's too much of a wonk sxort of throwing out numbers. you know, you can expect joe biden to say, gee, i took a look at your numbers and here's what they would do to george next door. ryan has to be careful about t

was to bring in joe biden as his vp candidate. what did mitt romney do? he brought in paul ryan who has even less, if you could imagine that, foreign policy experience except maybe perhaps voting against tougher sanctions on iran while he was in congress. as far as that argument's concerned, i think it's rather debunked. i want to read to you very quickly a quote from mitt romney from that video with the 47%. this is his -- this is his foreign policy in a nutshell. so what do you do -- this is about peace in the middle east. you say you move things along the best way you can. you hope for some degree of stability. but you recognize this is an unsolved problem and we kick the ball down the field and hope ultimately somehow something will happen and resolve it. that's what mitt romney said on foreign policy behind closed doors. whatever he says today in a couple of hours, you got to juxtapose that to that quote in the video when he thought no one else was listening. >> john, one of mitt romney's problems is the only specifics he's given as to how his foreign policy differs from presid

know paul ryan isn't the inexperienced debater romney makes him out to be. you know, why is the campaign, you know, kind of playing this game again? i mean, this is somebody who spent seven terms on congress. he knows what it is to speak in front of people and debate an issue. >> this is all about psychological warfare at this point. each camp is trying to psych out the other in terms of what the experience is, where they're going to head, what they're not going to say, what they're going to say, but, you know, mitt romney is almost right when he said that maybe paul debated in high school because he started his political career so young. he was 27, maybe 28 at the time wrish think we have some video. he did do a debate during his first congressional campaign back in 1998 when he beat the democrat lidia spotswood. there you see. it's a little grainy, old, but there you see a very young paul ryan having a debate, but to be fair, debating somebody in a congressional district in wisconsin is not even close to the same as debating on the vice presidential level in front of tens of m
